What to Check During Monthly Inspection Of Fire Extinguishers?

A fire extinguisher is a device that is used to extinguish fire. It is essential to install in every property (home or business) for safety purposes. Most people don't think about it until disaster strikes.

Just as installation of extinguishers is important, its maintenance is also equally important. Checking the fire extinguisher periodically is important to make sure that it’s functioning optimally.

According to the National Fire Protection Agency's (NFPA), inspection of fire extinguishers should be done every month and maintenance should be done once a year.

Monthly inspection can be performed by the owner himself, while for the  yearly fire extinguisher maintenance a professional will be needed.

Aspects that are to be considered during monthly inspection of extinguisher includes-

Easily accessible

Fire extinguisher should be easily accessible, during an emergency of fire. Any sort of things like furniture or other items should not block your way when you need to operate the extinguisher.

Visible

Having to search for a fire extinguisher, when a fire breaks out is not what you would want to do. The extinguisher should be mounted on a wall where it is clearly visible.

Extinguisher identification signs should be used. It makes it easy to locate the extinguisher in case of an emergency.

Unused tamper seal
Checking the tamper seal is essential. It verifies that the extinguisher has not been used yet.

Unused pull pin

The pull pin is used to operate the extinguisher. The pull pin at the top verifies that the fire protection equipment has not been used or tampered with.

Proper pressure gauge

Pressure gauge indicates pressure inside the extinguisher. The pressure gauge needle should be in the green area of the dial.

Physical damage

Any physical damage or corrosion of the equipment allows the owner to replace it. So, if you notice any damage, you can get it replaced.

Damaged hoses or nozzles

The extinguisher's hoses or nozzles should not be damaged. Therefore, during monthly inspection of equipment, hoses or nozzles should be checked.
So, if you are doing the inspection of fire protection equipment, then make sure to keep all these points in mind. In case of any problem, you should contact a professional.
